Boat Trailer Accessories Worth Adding (Fender Pads, Steps & More)

While it's an essential piece of equipment for anyone who has one, a boat trailer usually spends most of its life being ignored by its owner. Yes, it gets a glance at the tires before a trip and a hose-down afterward, but all the attention goes to the boat that it is dutifully lugging around. Meanwhile, the fender gets used as a step at almost every launch and retrieval - despite it being a job that many fenders were never designed or built for.

You can see how that might be a problem.

The best boat trailer accessories fix that sort of everyday, common oversight remarkably well, and a fender step pad is, logically speaking, one of the most important additions you can have.

Aside from fender step pads, a few sensible habits around tie-downs and boarding will make the whole routine of owning and towing a trailer safer, some of which we will cover in this guide. Get into those habits before boating season arrives, and your trailer will benefit.

Key Takeaways

• A fender step pad gives you grip and shields the fender from boots and buckles.
• SC Wake's trailer fender pads come in four sizes, in 39-inch and 78-inch lengths.
• Check tie-down straps for fraying and sun damage before every trip.
• Not every fender can take a person's weight, so check yours before you stand on it.
• Step pads on the boat itself, such as on the ladder, cut down on slips after launch.

Fender Step Pads: The Core Upgrade

For the unfamiliar, a fender step pad is a non-slip surface that sits on top of your trailer fender and transforms a slick bit of bodywork into somewhere you can actually grip. If you have ever stepped onto a wet fender in boat shoes, you already know why that is useful.

SC Wake's boat trailer fender pads are made from marine-grade materials and are built to handle saltwater and UV exposure. The surface is non-slip and impact-resistant, which comes in extremely handy when boots and dropped wrenches both land in the same spot.

It's a fairly simple but highly practical boat trailer accessory, because ultimately, your fender gets a layer of much needed cushioning, and your feet get something with grip.

Picking the Right Size

There are four sizes, in 39-inch and 78-inch lengths and 6.38-inch and 9.25-inch widths. Just measure the flat top of your fender first, then choose the pad that fits without hanging over the edge. The 78-inch length suits longer fenders, such as those on tandem-axle trailers, while the 39-inch length works where space is tighter.

If you tow a boat that you launch alone, you should also consider where your feet actually land. Now, that might sound like an obvious thing to point out, but it often gets overlooked. That said, most people stand near the same spot every time, so a pad that covers that zone does more good than one that is technically bigger.

Fitting It Yourself

Boat trailer step installation is quick and simple (which is exactly what you want from any job that involves crouching beside a wet trailer). Just wipe the fender clean and let it dry before fitting anything to it, because ramp grime is a poor foundation for anything you want to stay put.

Tie-Downs and Fender Protection

Transom straps hold the stern down, while the winch strap and safety chain do the equivalent job at the bow, and none of them are worth trusting on reputation alone - caution, as always with towing a boat, is highly advised.

• Check the webbing for fraying, cuts, or sun-bleached patches before every trip
• Pull over after the first few miles and re-check tension, since straps tend to loosen once the load settles
• Replace anything that looks stiff, cracked, or faded rather than waiting for it to fail
• Keep a spare strap in the truck, because the one time you need it is never convenient

The fender takes a similar amount of pressure without anyone worrying about them too much. Boots, gear bags, and the occasional boat that arrives at a slight angle all leave their mark on bare paint or metal, and a pad absorbs most of that wear before it becomes a permanent scar on the trailer.

It's also worth checking whether your fender is actually rated to take a person's weight before you make a habit of standing on it. Thin stamped fenders can flex or give way under load, and a pad protects the surface, not the structure underneath. If that's ever in doubt, the trailer manufacturer or a local dealer can tell you.

Boarding Safety Tips

Naturally, ramps are wet, and wet ramps are slick, especially near the waterline where algae settles in. Wear shoes with real grip and keep one hand on something solid whenever you climb on or off. Make sure the trailer is chocked or the tow vehicle is in park with the brake set before you scramble anywhere near the boat.

And, of course, never climb onto a trailer that is moving, however keen the crowd at the ramp is to see how it launches.

Once you are aboard, the slip hazards move to the ladder and the transom steps, and that is where SC Wake's Naked Feet pads are also very useful. Each set of two is precision-cut from genuine SeaDek with a soft brushed texture, and the peel-and-stick backing means fitting them takes only a few minutes. They also cushion hard surfaces for bare feet and help protect paint and gelcoat from wear.

Bottom Line

A trailer set up with a decent pad and tight straps will make every launch far calmer. None of it is complicated or expensive (which is probably why it gets skipped so often), right up until someone slips on a wet fender or a strap lets go on the highway.

➜ If your fender is somewhat overworked, take a look at SC Wake's fender pads and pick something that suits your trailer.

FAQs

What are the best boat trailer accessories to add first?

A fender step pad and a fresh set of tie-downs give you the most benefit for the least effort. Both deal with things you touch on every single trip.

Do I need a boat trailer step?

If you climb onto the trailer at launch or retrieval, yes. A boat trailer step with a non-slip surface gives your foot a stable landing spot and keeps the fender from taking all the wear.

What size fender step pad do I need?

Measure the flat top of your fender. SC Wake offers four sizes, in 39-inch and 78-inch lengths and 6.38-inch and 9.25-inch widths, so pick the one that fits without overhanging the edge.

How often should I check trailer tie-downs?

Look at them before every trip, and check the tension again after the first few miles on the road, since straps can loosen as the load settles.

Can I stand on any trailer fender?

Not always. Some fenders are stamped from thin metal and can flex under a person's weight, so check what yours is rated for before using it as a step.
